Self-Determination

Hello everyone, I hope you all are having a wonderful day! I am sharing with you another original poem I wrote about loving yourself before you love others. If you guys like these types of posts, please let me know and I will continue to write them!

Self-Determination

New year, new me.

That’s what they always say

But when will we learn from our mistakes?

When will we stop changing ourselves for other people?

When will we learn to love ourselves first?

We say all the time, “I’ve learned my lesson.”

But what does that really mean?

Did we really learn something when we keep going back to that old friend who constantly neglects you?

Or when that toxic relationship is too much to handle?

Or do we just love people more than we love ourselves?

I have trouble picking friends, I always have, and I always will.

I let people in when I feel weak or need a shoulder to cry on,

But it hurts the most when people betray you when you need them at the time where you are losing hope.

They just leave without ever saying

Goodbye.

It hurts, it sucks, I know.

I’ve been through it, quite a lot actually.

But you think you can change their mind and they will run back to you.

You can’t. Everything you do will never change their mind.

You have to move on and keep looking forward.

But that doesn’t mean you will forget about them.

You’re going to wish they were here to talk to you.

You will move on and find someone new.

You’ll love yourself like you have never loved before.

It’s a change and it can be difficult,

But you’ll get through it.

You’re strong.

You’re hopeful.

You’re loved.

It’s true, we never really follow through with our words,

But our actions are what does the talking.

We crave for someone to care for us, someone to tell us that you are loved, and you matter.

But we don’t really tell ourselves that…

We should start doing that more often!

I don’t wish any bad upon my past relationships with people that I used to love.

I want them to learn and grow from this experience.

I want them to appreciate what they have around them and move on with their lives.

I want them to either know I am sorry or that you really didn’t deserve me at all.

I want them to be happy.

What I really want for myself is to be grateful for everyone that has impacted my life and to take those stepping stones and make them climb high mountains.

Keep moving forward,

Stay hopeful,

Love you and everything around you and remember the good things you did to that person, you won’t regret it.

Love, Sonia.
